The President's Spotlight on Excellence

Assistant Professor Wendy Barnes-Thomassen has taught English and Writing for 13 years and at Union for six years. She writes poems, essays, and hybrid genre texts. She is the co-chair of the Experiential Education Advisory Committee and teaches a pilot course in the new Accelerated Learning Program (LEAP). "I have an active writing practice, which informs my teaching practice. My own writing often generates the assignments I give my students. They like to know that I am facing my own writing challenges and learning to manage my own writing process, just as they are. Students are also encouraged to learn that even experienced writers write multiple drafts, need editors, and feel insecure about their work from time to time. By helping students to create their own writing groups, I also try to emphasize the value of a supportive community to their educational and professional endeavors. The support of many dedicated colleagues facilitates my work here at Union and makes me a better instructor." Prof. Barnes-Thomassen earned a master of Fine Arts in Writing from California Institute of the Arts and is in her final year of coursework in the Doctor of Letters Program at Drew University.
