Union County College Changes Name to UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ

New Name

On July 1, 2022, UCNJ County College changed its name to “Union College of Union County, NJ.” The change was approved by both the college’s Board of Trustees and Board of Governors at the May 24, 2022 meeting.

New Logo

UCNJ’s new logo incorporates the traditional red and white that the College has used in the past, in addition to a new, darker red to complete the design. The logo features a flame, for UCNJ’s seal, “Fiat Lux,” in the shape of the letter “U,” representing UCNJ.

Why UCNJ?

“Adopting the name of UCNJ moves us into the future, to showcase our academic excellence and national recognition. However, it also connects us to our history. It acknowledges our commitment to our county and the community we serve. We are excited about this change and look forward to introducing everyone to the new UCNJ.”

UCNJ President – Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin

The shortening of the college’s name supports our mission and recognizes the college’s national prominence.

During the 2020-21 academic year, UCNJ celebrated the largest graduating class in its history conferring 1,760 degrees and certificates. UCNJ’s on-time graduation has more than quintupled over the past decade, now exceeding both the state and national average.

Haven’t we changed names before?

Yes! This is our 5th name in the college’s nearly 90-year history.

The College was established in 1933 as Union County Junior College by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as an “emergency junior college” through the federal Works Project Administration to provide jobs for unemployed teachers and professors. By the 1940s, the College was Union Junior College and then in 1967 it became Union College. In 1982, Union College was consolidated with Union County Technical Institute (UCTI) to become Union County College, the public, two-year college serving Union County. Now, 40 years later, the name has changed once again, with a nod to one of its former names, as UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ.

Are we still a community college?

Yes! UCNJ remains a public, comprehensive community college.

The College remains committed to providing quality, affordable, accessible educational programs to the greater Union County region.
